Using Two Wiki's - one public/one private

Our neighborhood wiki, CastleHillsCommunity.com has been VERY successful. We just took the whole site private due to concerns from neighbors who were airing their dirty laundry..I agree this is the right thing to do but some other things are happening such as people grumbling about the very limited information they get when they hit the main page now...we have very limited character count to explain about the privacy policy and what to do...What I would really like to do is have a much more informative and pretty front page that is public and everything else behind it private. I know we can't do this today BUT I had an idea and would love some input on it:

1. Why can't I create a 2nd wiki that will probably remain just one page, set it up exactly like I want and have one big link to the private wiki. I would want to move our custom URL to hit the new 'public' site but that should not be hard....what am I overlooking here....does this sound like a good idea to get a public AND a private side to this?

Thanks! Robb

I think I like this idea, a wiki linked within the wiki. This way I could store student videos, any identifying information within the locked wiki? Do you find this valuable?

The idea can be brought to existance now.
1. Create a second site.
2. Place your content on the home page of the second site.
3. Have two links
Existing members - Link to the private site url address
New Members - Supply information for new members to request an invite to the private site. This could on a second page of the new site.
4. Redirect your custom url to the new public page site
5. Set up a Category on the Public Page for
Comments and/or requests.

Suggestion.
If there is availability to MS Powerpoint, you may want to consider setting up a slide show of the community with hyperlinks to the private site and or invitation process for new members.

To see a working model of a powerpoint front page with links to other pages in the slides follow this link.

If the slide presentation is what you may want to do, I will set up instructions on how to do so. Leave a message here or on Splats with decision.
