Suggested Improvement to blow away other community platforms

I am a firm believer in wetpaint wikis as being an unbelievably brilliant tool. Our own wiki is very successful. I would like to see the discussion forum facility enhanced. We also have a sepparate forum (www.guzzista.myclan.me.uk) which s also very successful. Currently though we have members on the wiki and members on the forum. It would be amazing to be able to bring them all together. There are those who love creating content on the wiki but there are others who prefer the banter of the forum.

Our forum is a phpbb2 forum. Our users love the smilies, the fact that you can post images, url links etc etc. We started the sepparate forum because the wetpaint version is a bit basic and people don't use it that often. What I do like about the wetpaint forum is that it is linked to the site's pages. If there was a way of making the wetpaint forum work in a similar way to phpbb type forums, or if there were a way in which a phpbb forum could be integrated/embedded in to the wiki I think there would be an explosion in usage.

We have links with forums that have 5,000 members...imagine that volume on our beloved wikis! There would be no better community building platform anywhere out there!

Thanks for listening.

Joe

Yes, you can do this by embedding a web page within an Iframe. There are more details about how to do this at http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Including+HTML+Pages

Genius! That is very cool Jeremy, thank you. Just a thought...what is the width of the editable page area?

Cheers

Thank you for the suggestion Guzzista. One question though, related to Joe's question: I noticed that your Forum page is pretty wide, enough that a horizontal scroll bar is required. Generally speaking, extra-wide pages rank high on the list of usability problems. Have you tried to keep the width down so that horizontal scrolling is not required on the most common browsers? Or is the phpbb forum width set?

Many thanks,

Mark

It only scrolls if there are threads with extra-long titles. We work very hard to make sure that our base resolution of 1024x768 does not need a horizontal scroll unless a piece of user-generated content requires it. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Yeah, it's the user-generated content that is the problem for sure. I'm not referring to Joe's forum but to the JoinTheImpact site I'm involved with. Doesn't seem to be any good way to prevent it, better to solve on a case-by-case basis by individual site owners.

I would assume this format would be considered a "WYSIWYG" system.. However.. It's not a very user friendly system.. I get head aches just trying to navigate the pages.. When there is so many works to correct.. is it really worth correcting?.. or cleaning the slate and start over.. As a Ning.com and Opera user.. I to have had or sent suggestions to them.. Ning has failed to move forward on this.. but I do see some progress.. Opera on the other hand.. lacks the CSS experience to be able to allow users the freedom to create.. So its a trade off.. I like and hate both networks.. So I wanted to look for something better.. Thought WetPaint would offer this to me.. The people are great here, friendly and all.. but again the Bad out weights the good. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

My experience of the whole wetpaint thing is very positive. I looked for an easy to use platform when setting up my wiki a couple of years ago and was delighted when I found this one.
There are one or two things that in my opinion could be better, such as the functionality (or lack of) functionality of the wiki's in-built forum, but that's a minor thing in the grand scheme of the thing as a whole. I have a sepparate phpbb3 forum anyway which works really well and is pulling in members on a regular basis. It would just be awesome to have both together as one entity as I think wetpaint would find a new, large vein of users and members if this were possible.
Overall though, in the last two years, I've seen a stream of constant and regular small improvements that have enhanced the useability of the site so I know it's heading in the right direction :-)
Little improvements over time, just like the Moto Guzzi motorcycles I write about, it's a good formula!
