Visitor access to private sites

Is it possible for someone to sign in as a visitor to a private site (ie to view and request joining). The drop down "What is this used for" for the site descriptor gives this impression. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

No this is not possible. Members can only sign into and see a private site when they are invited to it. Do you find this valuable?
