Going to private wiki when not a member (but logged in) gives bug page
May 11 2008, 9:54 PM EDT
The default "bug" page displays when I am logged in with this "test" account and try to browse to another private wiki that I'm not yet a member of. The expected behavior is to see the "this wiki is private" page.

The bug occurs whether I follow a link from another wiki or whether I open a new (IE6 ) browser window and enter the address manually.

Trying to view the page when *not* logged in gives the "[wiki site title] is a private wiki." page, complete with "member sign-in" button.

My students are getting very confused by this behavior. They join our "core" wiki, which gives them instructions on how to construct their "group project" wiki (a separate wiki site for each group), but when they try following the link from the "core" wiki to their "group project" wiki, they get an error instead of a "you're not a member yet" message. They need to accept the "group project" wiki invitation as well as the "core" wiki invitation, but seeing a bug page instead of a "you're not a member" page prevents most of them from realizing this.

Site admins: try testing this bug on your end, please; if you can't reproduce, please PM klinthull.

The "bug" page also occurs when my students try to follow the "accept invitation" link in the email inviting them to the second private wiki site (the group-project-specific site). If they're NOT logged in, they see the "this is a private wiki" page and can proceed. If they ARE logged in, they get the "bug" page and can't add themselves to the wiki, despite following the "accept invitation" link.

I've told them the workaround (log out before following the link in the email); however, it would be nice to know whether the bug can be fixed.

Thanks,
Klint

Previous reply post was me. (klinthull is my primary account.) Just forgot that I had to join with this account, too. :-)

You should try cleaing your browser cache and cookies. Instructions for doing so can be found here:

Thanks; however, we already followed those instructions; in fact, I tried the procedure (going directly to the page while logged in) using an alternate browser that hadn't been used with wetpaint before, so caching isn't the issue.

We've devised a workaround; I'm more concerned about knowing whether the bug gets fixed. :-)

Interesting ... guess I was signed out again, even though I'm signed in on the wiki in question with the page open. Hmmm.

Tell your students not to sign in before navigating to the private wiki. Send your students emails using the invite button on the horizontal navigation bar (near top) to allow them to access the wiki. 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Yep - thanks - already gave them the workaround, and sent out repeat invites. Most of my students have figured it out now. (Most.) Just waiting to hear from someone at wetpaint about actually fixing the bug, since obviously this still puts up a roadblock for the less-technically-inclined users.

Gracias,

We're still getting that "bug" page. I finally got fed up and opened up the wikis to anyone, so my students could sign in to the sites and get going on their projects. However, that isn't an ideal workaround.

I have not been able to reproduce this problem yet, but I'm not running IE6. If possible, I would recommend updating to a more current version IE or try using Firefox. Our QA team can take a look and see if the problem you are having might be specific to IE6.

Follow up:
I figured out how to reproduce the bug you are encountering (even in Firefox). I have reporting this to the QA team for further investigation. We hope to have a fix for it soon.
