Data security on a private wiki
May 8 2008, 3:34 PM EDT I am starting a wiki for the board of a volunteer organization to use as a virtual meeting space. A couple members have voiced concern about the access the wetpaint site administrators might have to the data content of the individual wikis. Their question is whether or not the data on a private wiki is really private/secure or can the wet paint 'folks' access the data. Also, they wanted assurances that only the invitees can access the private site. So the question, is there any way for someone to access a private site other than by invitation? Thank you dr.mom 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Data security on a private wiki
May 8 2008, 3:55 PM EDT No, no one can access a private wiki unless they're invited to it. The only people that could have access to the private wiki without getting an invite to it, might be Wetpaint them selfs (I would assume). But you'd have to get an answer from them to be sure. RE: Data security on a private wiki
May 8 2008, 3:55 PM EDT The only way one can access a private site is by invite. And yes, Wetpaint staff can access content on private sites, but we don't actively go out and snoop around people's privates sites unless there is some reason for us to be there (i.e. to help with a problem that's been reported). 1 out of 1 found this valuable. RE: Data security on a private wiki
Aug 19 2008, 1:43 AM EDT How about danger of getting hacked? Would it be correct to say that the only way a private wiki can be hacked is if the hacker somehow intercepts an invitation or a member's ID/password? Thanks! Do you find this valuable? |

If the site members use secure passwords and do not share them with others, it is highly unlikely that anyone will be able to gain access to the site. We have some general advice on how to prevent being hacked on http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Hacked+Accounts Do you find this valuable? |

I'm an experienced hacker myself (who uses his abilities for good), and if you think that's the only type of hacking out there, you're in for a HUGE surprise. There are actual Wetpaint "cheats" (that's what the hacker groups call them) that allow people to do various things to Wetpaint sites and their members. They're incredibly unknown, though. Aug 27 2008, 7:20 PM EDT Wow. I'm surprised Wetpaint didn't try and cover this up. So you're just going to let me say that Wetpaint is being actively hacked by hackers who could easily overthrow the entire thing with their eyes closed? It's true. Do you find this valuable? |

These are just communities with users that haven't learned the hard way about how to keep their account secure. Do you find this valuable? |

Aug 27 2008, 8:28 PM EDT I'd be surprised if you got any reports of things like this. Some of these "cheats" are things like "Delete site" and "Ban IP from Wetpaint." Scary stuff. Do you find this valuable? |
