A Design Question.
Apr 10 2008, 2:04 PM EDT | Post edited: Apr 10 2008, 2:04 PM EDT
My wiki has two major segments. The first has about 40 pages, one page of which will consist of another cluster of 40 or 50 pages. Should I create another wiki for the second segment with a link from the first or keep them both in one wiki? I am concerned about navigation issues, especially with out a table of contents. I could create a" site page" with all the links in a pseudo table of contents, but that my be very clumsy.

Any thoughts?

You can keep it one wiki and have an automatically generated table of contents listing all your pages. http://yoursitehere.wetpaint.com/sitemap Just change "yoursitehere" with your own sites domain. It doesn't have any anchor links though, just a page list. Do you find this valuable?

I assume I would use this URL as a link when needed on a page(s ) when I think necessary or useful? In general how would you suggest using this link? Should I put it on every page, the first page, .....? Do you find this valuable?

I think maybe you should create a main page called Sitemap and then copy the stuff from the URL I gave you. Provide a link on the homepage as well. Do you find this valuable?

Sometimes sites don't have a nice way to get organized and large amount of content and pages get grouped together because that's just the way the density of the information happens.

One way to deal with this is with rigorous and specific use of Keyword Tags and Tag Groups. If you carefully tag each page with meaningful keyword tags (and not too many) then create Tag Groups which encompass more specific informational groups than the Navigation can provide, you can create a very effective way to find and view information on the site.

You can then use links to the Keyword Group pages as navigational aids on a table of contents page.

I can certainly place a link on the home page. But I'm unsure of what you mean by "create a main page called Sitemap and then copy the stuff from the URL I gave you"

I created a new page, called it "SiteMap", but don't know how to get the sitemap to show up on the page.

A little confused.

Copy and paste the automatically generated sitemap regularly to that page. http://yoursitehere.wetpaint.com/sitemap 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Thats good news. Remember: The sitemap page you have created will need to be updated everytime you rename, delete or add a new page. So delete the content on the sitemap page and copy automatically generated content from the original page to update it. You don't have to do it for every time you rename, add etc. a page. Do it every week or so. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

What I did was enter this text and link to the URL in my page "Site Map".

"This wiki has two major segments. The first is mostly informational regarding Chapter XIV; the second, Web 2.0, is informational and collaborative. It may be useful to you in terms of wiki navigation to refer to the Site Map".

I won't need to update, will I?
