Enhancing the reader experience
Feb 4 2008, 7:23 AM EST
The great advantage of wikis is that their content can be continually improved to enhance their value to readers. In contrast, forum or thread topics just get longer. Thus if gems are present they just get buried. But starting or adding to a thread is more convenient for the writer. Both aims can be well satisfied if each thread IS AUTOMATICALLY converted to a wiki page yet still subject to being extended with replies or new threads. A natural consequence of such a change would be that all replies would be visible in place. This would encourage each reader to collapse out content which does not materially contribute to the discussion. Alternatively, the replies to the start of a thread could be hidden after a right pointing triangle and revealed in place when the triangle is clicked on. The navigation sidebar works like that. Do you find this valuable? |

Then, as well, I could easily revise my thread start or reply in place rather than only by adding another reply. The history would still contain every version for anyone who wanted to see all that detail.Further, as a reader, I could just read without having to take a side trip for every thread with more than a single reply. I would be very pleased with that change. Do you find this valuable? |
