Link to profiles in other Wetpaint wikis
Feb 2 2008, 7:31 PM EST Near as I can tell if I join three wikis, even if I want the same profile everywhere, I have to make each one separately. I'd be happy if there were a button to copy another profile of mine and then let me modify it at will. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Link to profiles in other Wetpaint wikis
Apr 16 2008, 7:09 PM EDT I agree. I just joined a couple of existing wikis, and created 2 of my own. It got sort of old making duplicate profiles. In some cases, I like the different profile for different wikis. If I join a sports wiki, people want to know about my sports interests. If I join a biology wiki, the other users would want to know about my interests in biology. But as you say, this could still be done by copying the profile and just modifying it, rather than starting from scratch. On a somewhat related note, I was editing a page that already had 2 tables on it, and I wanted to add a 4th table of the same format. I did not find a way to copy an existing table and paste a new copy of it. I had to create a new table, and then try to get its format the match the others. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Apr 18 2008, 2:06 PM EDT Some people like having a unique profile for each site since different sites can have a wide range of topics. However, the option for a "global" profile is something that we are looking into. Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 18 2008, 2:11 PM EDT When in EasyEdit try pressing Ctrl + A then Ctrl + C. When in your other profile press Ctrl + V. I admit its slower but that is how you get everything the same. Personally, I like have my profiles unique but many others don't Do you find this valuable? |

Apr 19 2008, 12:57 PM EDT "Some people like having a unique profile for each site since different sites can have a wide range of topics. However, the option for a "global" profile is something that we are looking into."When you design a feature, please try to think of how the users might wish to use it. There is a pretty good guide available from the originator of the Macintosh project at Apple, Jef Raskin. It is called "The Humane Interface" and the author's summary is posted at Nitpicker.PBwiki.com/The+Humane+Interface for your enjoyment. It might lead you to read the whole book. My initial thought would be that the first time one fills in a profile, it should go both into that specific wiki and into the global/default profile. Then if you ever create another Wetpaint wiki, the global profile should be automatically copied into the new profile. Thus the common case is handled at zero human effort and the user can change whatever she likes at zero extra effort. Why don't we discuss this in a wiki, where the presentation can get refined over time instead of just longer? Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Link to profiles in other Wetpaint wikis
Apr 19 2008, 2:15 PM EDT After looking at the profile pages for a variety of the wetpaint wikis, it looks like the idea was to allow each wiki to customize the profile it asks its users to fill in. The wiki owner (an perhaps moderators too?) can change the profile "template" to ask the people who join their wiki different questions. A gamer wiki might ask "what are your favorite first-person shooter games?" But a wiki about motorcycles would not want to ask that of its members, for example. Likewise if I join a gaming wiki and fill out those types of quetions, I would not want to select all, copy and paste into my "business" profile on a wiki I use for my job. So, there is a good reason why wetpaint has set things up the way they have. But there may be a compromise to be found. If copy-paste between wiki profiles s does work, I would not see a need for wetpaint to do anything else. Do you find this valuable? |
