Tags are great, but we need tools to manage them
Jan 20 2008, 2:46 AM EST In my wiki people put all kinds of weird tags on forum posts, and it can actually make it harder to find things rather than easier. For example, people often put the same persons name down in different ways (e.g. nickname-only, first-only, first+last, last-only). This is exactly the kind of thing that tags are supposed to help with, but when people do this in an unmanaged way it can actually make the tags worse than normal searching. The tag cloud can be helpful for identifying and managing this problem, but it would be great if moderators had more powerful tools. 1) Give us a way to find these problems by letting us see *all* the tags used in our wikis, and their frequency of use--not just the most popular tags, but for all tags--and from there display all the uses of the tags. 2) To handle problems like the example above, give us a tool that would automatically replace all of the odd tags with the preferred alternative, for example replace nickname, first-only and last-only tags with the first+last tag, and do a simple delete if the preferred tag is already there as well. Wow! Super-powerful. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Tags are great, but we need tools to manage them
Jan 31 2008, 2:44 PM EST This is exactly the functionality I'm looking for. In fact it's almost important enough for me to change to another wiki tool. I'm struggling to see how to try and maintain some semblance of organisation of knowledge if everyone has a free for all in terms of classificaition. Ideally I want to be able to restrict the tags to a pre-defined list and have the users choose from this list. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
