Wetpaint does not have a 'footnote' feature, but you could do something like add a table at the bottom of the page below the body of the text and add your own custom made footnotes there. Or, you could create a separate footnote page and link text from other pages to it. That's just two possibilities, and there are probably other ways you could do it as well. It's up to you.

It's real a pity that there are no real footnotes since it makes it difficult to document sources.

Adding footnotes would be easy to do using tables as Jeremy says. It would be a waste creating a button to automatically do it.

"Adding footnotes would be easy to do using tables as Jeremy says. It would be a waste creating a button to automatically do it."Jeremy's suggestion is very welcome, but at present, the footnote references can't include links to the actual footnotes as Wikipedia does, unless each footnote has it's own wiki page. Footnotes are a vital part of the largest and most successful Wikis, such as Wikipedia, the World of Warcraft wiki (70,006 pages!) http://www.wowwiki.com/WoWWiki:Citation and Wookiepedia (63,538 pages!) http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Wookieepedia:Sourcing The reason that footnotes are so important to larger wikis is that different editors often have very different views. Relying on sources helps them avoid edit wars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verifiability Wetpaint needs a good (linkable) implementation of footnotes if it is to be a viable choice for a larger or more serious wiki. Luckily, developers appear to be taking seriously the idea of anchor points within a page. With these, reasonable footnote functionality could be added. However, many pages on Wikipedia have hundreds of footnotes. Jeremy's suggestion doesn't explan how these footnotes could be automatically renumbered if someone were to add a new footnote in the middle of the article. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Without footnotes the quality of wiki articles can not really be judged in a professional way, so we NEED FOOTNOTES !!!

Agreed. Nothing against TV fan sites, classes and roleplaying, but if Wetpaint wants to move beyond them to host larger wikis, they need real footnotes with automatic renumbering.Further, if they are clever, I bet that they could find a way to do it that wouldn't take too many programming resources. 1 out of 1 found this valuable.
