Not to be a wise-ass or a smart-ass, but I have an answer to that question:
Simply because you no longer want that site to be up. It doesn't matter whether someone doesn't want you to delete the site or not. It's the Creator's or Administrator's decision to delete it.

Now since you brought it up, I'd like to add something to your post:
Anonymous, as wolfhunter said, there will be a user or two who might not want you to shut down the site. In this case, I don't think you would mind letting them be an Administrator, and let them take over the site. Now if you do this, don't expect to be promoted back if you cancel your membership and want to re-join. Yes, you made the site, but you left it. They don't have to make you more than a Registered User or Writer.
If you don't want anyone to run the site at all, then follow their instructions on how to 'delete' your site.

But I must tell you, it is a very slim chance such ads would appear here on Wetpaint.
Even if they did, Wetpaint isn't responsible. Google is. Wetpaint uses Google Ad Sense.
It is a very slim chance you will encounter those ads, but if you do, you can report it here with a screenshot with proof.

Thanks for the heads-up. That partnership ended a while ago. Dotster still offers the cheapest Domain Redirect service on the internent. 5 dollar a year. The Dotster page has been removed from Wetpaint Central until it can be reworked.

"I quite often get the "server not found' message when trying to get on. It comes up for most of the wikis and takes more than 10 minutes to connect through. Some members still can't get on at all, others do to post 1 message and then leave as it takes them nearly several minutes for that 1 posting.
This is shameful of Wetpaint to leave things go for so long. One has to wonder if they will do anything at all."

We are all in accord in being frustrated with the slowness problem We are all suffering. As far as the "Server not found" message that you are receiving is due to the slowness of YOUR connection to the internet compounded with the slowness of WETPAINT. And this will apply to others receiving that alert message. Not everyone gets that message.
You have tested your connection on earlier problems and it was noted that your internet connection is not very good. It is slow in comparison to most others. Your computer will see the slowness problem more drastically and your browser will quit trying to get to a wiki and give you the message the "Server not found" message. The slowness of Wetpaint has not changed a bit for any of us.
It is your slow connection speed along with the speed of your browser that is creating the alert message during this issue with Wetpaint.

As stated over and over. We will have to be patient until it is fixed. There is no new light the community can shed on this problem and there is nothing that this forum can do to fix it.

"This is a serious flaw with Wetpaint. We have private student information someone (a student contributor) posted to our wiki, and there's no way to remove the information PERMANENTLY. to protect the students' privacy. Deleting it from the page leaves it in the page history, and deleting the page simply moves it to the Uncategorized area, where the information is still accessible. I'm rather shocked that Wetpaint hasn't fixed this problem yet. -T"

The capability to delete pages from the page history has been around for a long time.

The way to delete a page and its versions, so no information will be seen by others, with the exception of a moderator or above is to follow these steps below:
1. Remove all information on the current page and save the page. This will save a blank page.
2. With moderator or above privileges, go to view page history.
3. To the left of the date/time and above the first page revision entry shown there is a down pointing chevron. Left mouse click that one time, This will expand all revisions of the page history.
4. Notice, under each entry in the history, there is a "Delete this version" button.
5. Click the delete this version button for each entry in the history. This will apply a strike through on each of the page revisions deleted,
6. Only a moderator or above, will be able to restore a deleted page from the history. The general public will not be able to view anything in the page history list.

Hope this helps with removing instances of personal information that resides on that students page

A little tip from my side: creativity.
You can do a lot with special signs for example, or even your own edited pictures to give your website the "final touch".
