  • The G25 Protest! First we asked privately; but were dismissed.

Then we petitioned peacefully; but were silenced.

Now we protest publicly; a protest that can neither be dismissed nor silenced.

I have rallied together the largest and greatest sites of Wetpaint to ask one last time for enhanced site security. The proposals of our protest are simple; effective measures which will ensure the termination of trolls; preventative measures which will stop waves of spam bots ravaging sites; and supportive measures which will ensure the vulnerable users are protected from undesired material!

We present to the Wetpaint staff our manifesto highlighting our concerns and recommendations for possible solutions.

    1. Waves of spam bots are continually attacking and destroying sites; flooding them with viruses, trojans and malicious adware!

SOLUTION: A simple logic problem to be completed during account creation; for example, “what does 2 + 7 equal?” or “Jenny is taller than Jack who is shorter than Jane. Who is tallest?” This would have several questions which computers cannot answer.
These have been proven to be 100% effective, if created properly, against attacks from a computer.

    2. Person A trolls a site. The staff bans them. Person A creates another account and continues trolling; and so on and so forth.

SOLUTION: A proper IP banning system. We need the ability to properly ban users. Whilst this solution has only a 44% estimated effectiveness, it is better than the current system which has 0% effectiveness against trolls creating new accounts.

  • site blocked as being malicious So my browser blocked the shimmyschool wetpaint site as being "malicious" I thought that this was in error until I had someone naviagte to my site only to have an advertisement hijack their computer telling them that they can't run their regular antivirus because it is infected. We had to restor their system to an earlier point. I don't mind advertisements because that's what supports the sites and keeps them running, but this kind of "advertising" is illegal. Can you find the source and put a stop to it please??

    Much appreciated!

  • Virus loaded automatically onto friend's computer crashing it When my friend went to my wetpaint website, malware was installed which took over his computer and asked for money to remove the bug. Tech support in his office is now in the process of reloading his computer. If I can get the specific bug name, I'll report it here. This happened about 90 minutes ago.

  • Virus threat Visitors to the acac.wetpaint.com site have experienced virus attacks from "spyware protection 2009" which apparently attacks with viruses named BankerFox.A and Nuquel.E.

These threats are apparently commercial promotions but can affect windows files for computer use. The viruses may be distributed through the scrolling ads.

Does wetpaint have any means of removing viruses from sites?

Any further advice for site administrators to handle such problems?

  • Virus Problem I have been a long-time wetpaint user and frequnetly recommend it to teachers when giving faculty development workshops. Three teachers who are using a wiki I created with wetpaint have reported SERIOUS problems. When on this page of my wiki (www.buildinsecondlife.wetpaint.com) they got virus protection update alerts. One of them (unfortunately) clicked on it and admitted a trojan virus to her computer. Hours of downtime and hundreds of dollars of technical support to retrieve her data. I will stop using wetpaint.

  • Trojan Virus on Wetpaint.com A member of our wetpaint site alerted me to the fact that there is a "trojan" ad here at wetpaint that is one of the flash adverts. It tells you that "Your PC is infected" etc, and tries to install some nasty stuff if a person happens to agree to any of it. One of site members advises that this is now the 4th time over the last two weeks he's encountered this and he didn't have any other instances of his browser opened that time. He's thinking it's a sign of a bad script in one of the ads, and thought I should point it out to wetpaint.com.

  • malware--flash security fix Can I get more specific directions to find the security fix from Flash for the advertisement-related malware problem? A security bulletin # or something searchable would be a great help to me.

  • Viruses caused by Advertisements I've noticed it on my computer for a long tiem, but I never thougth it was a problem until one of my friends tried to join and he got the same viruses i got on my computer, on his laptop. My other friend, already a user, has noticed the same thign but like me she didnt have as much of a problem with it.....

    The virus is this:

The computer immediately preforms an unprompted scan by a protection program not installed on the computer being used. The results coem in at at least 3500 viruses, exactly 34 of them being critical. The non-critical viruses are usually tracking cookies, the critical ones are all Trojans and Webmailworms (or soemthign liek that... Webworm..? or Mailworm..? can't remember) and then the program says it can fix the viruses. naturally anyone would click it, but then it turns out that you ave to buy the program. if you do, it does nothing. If you dont, it keeps on popping up saying you have to buy it.
