Promoting websites
Lots of keyword tags can actually hurt your search results as search engines consider it to be keyword stacking.
Use a specific set of keyword throughout your site,a nd make it a small, effective, and descriptive list. Make sure your page titles contain those keywords. Make sure they're on your homepage.
Also, be sure to use the wiki promotion tools that are available in the Promote area of your site. We designed those tools based on our knowledge of what works for the wikis that are top-ranked by search engines.
It is entirely possible to have great ranking in search results. Do a search for James Bond Wiki on google, and the first entry is a Wetpaint site, above the Wikipedia entry. Do a search for Zombie Survival and the first result is another Wetpaint wiki, above the links to the official sites for the books of the same name.
Patience is also important. Search engines don't refactor their results immediately, especially if you're in a crowded space.

Promote link has gone
Firstly, I apologise for reviving a dead thread.
The promote button was an essential part of the Zombie Survival and Wiki. It is simply impossible to manage a site this size without the proper tools.
Can we please have some feedback as to when the tools will be restored?
Thank you,
Marsden

Private wiki and the search engines??
Correct. The only page of a private site that is possible for search engines to index is the landing page you see when you go to the site without being logged in. All other content on the site is protected and features that would expose the content (RSS, Droplets, search engine Promotion tools) are disabled.

I don't have the Promote link next to my My Profile
Private sites don't have access to the Promote Your Wiki tools. Those tools are meant for optimizing a wiki for the best placement within search engine results. Since private wikis can't be scanned by the search engines, those tools won't do any good.

No Settings link and short More Tools list
At http://clpcsound.wetpaint.com/, which we've been using successfully for a couple of years, all of a sudden, no one other than the Administrator - myself, can get the Easy Edit or any other clickable functions to respond. It appears that the Home page is "Locked" but I can not verify that as there is no "Settings" link. I use MSIE Ver. 8 and the other folks use Firefox 3.5.9. I will attempt to put a couple of screen shots in the User Reported Bugs photo album. Also, the More Tools drop down only has two items on it. The names of the Screen Shots will be "More Tools short list" and "No Settings link."
Thanks, Don Brown, 281.488.0754

Sitemap does not display all the of pages of my Wiki
There probably won't be any changes to this in our next release, since it's almost ready for my team to start testing, but the release after that is a possibility. The problem is the length of the page and the amount of time it takes to generate that sitemap page. We're looking into it as a possibility.
1000 pages is a lot, but we have several sites with many more (http://wikicancer.org has over 4000). Certain features may be slower than others, but I can't think of any current features other than the Sitemap which limit the amount of pages returned.
I'd recommend heavily promoting the Search feature on your wiki. Since most of your pages seem to be specific names, I would bet that many people would love to search for their own name or a name they know.

Invitation to private wiki not allowing invitees to participate
"I have worked in several startups, and understand the brutality of layoffs. I also realize the importance of developing a viable business plan. However, a business model that does not put the authentic needs of its users at the center of its mission is doomed to failure. " There within the quote lies the answer. Wetpaint decided to alter their business plan to prepare for a sustainable future. Their business plan is migrating away from a "long-tailed, get as many users as possible to create wikis" for ad placements on pages. Thus affording the opportunity for revenue sharing only after 100000 page views per month.
The advertising dollars just aren't there for those small sites -- sometimes built around weddings, family reunions and other very targeted events. And certainly the ones that are described in this thread.
Many of the tiny sites attract only a few hundred page views each month. Certainly the private sites had produced even a smaller amount of page views. And at present the private sites produce no opportunities for revenue sharing and was deemed so by the advertisers.
And that's forcing Wetpaint to focus efforts on the bigger ticket entertainment sites that drive much of the traffic through the network.
In recent months, Wetpaint has been pushing into those areas with promotion of its wiki-designed sites around TV shows, movies, games and other forms of entertainment.
1. Startups will have to trim resources in order to stay afloat. 2. A viable business plan must be in place to assure the investors will see a ROI on their investments and for the company to turn a profit. Any business model must meet that simple criteria. 3. The authentic needs of the users of Wetpaint are still in place. It is still the easiest wiki farm on the internet, thus allowing opportunities for more non-technical savvy people to have their niche on the net. (Continuing in the next post.)

Not Working
Here is an excellent tip provided by Joshutex
Simple, yet effective steps can be taken to ensure that your site see's more visitors:
* Have an easy site name, and a solid site description http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Site+Name+and+Description
* The Promote my Wiki area is also a great place to go http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Wiki+Promote+Area
* Invite friends. Chances are, they'll invite their friends with the same passion as you, and then they'll invite their friends, etc.. http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Invite+Friends
* Exchange links with simular sites. If you have a passion, others share it. It’s the essence of Wetpaint Wikis. http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Link+and+Banner+Exchanges
* Build better page names and descriptions. http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Naming+Pages --and/or-- http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Page+Description
* Link your own content. I mean internally link it. Once a new, interested person on your site see's one great page, chances are they are going to want to see similar pages. That's the beauty of linking http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Internal+Links
* Use social media tools like Facebook, Myspace, or Twitter to spread the word about your new site http://www.facebook.com --and/or-- http://www.myspace.com --and/or-- http://www.twitter.com
*Get a good, easy to remember URL. If you have something like "csi.wetpaint.com" then it should be easy to remember. But if you have something like "csifansforever122.wetpaint.com" then you may want to try a custom url. Domains are getting cheaper, so start snagging! http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/page/Custom+URLs
