  • The G25 Protest! First we asked privately; but were dismissed.

Then we petitioned peacefully; but were silenced.

Now we protest publicly; a protest that can neither be dismissed nor silenced.

I have rallied together the largest and greatest sites of Wetpaint to ask one last time for enhanced site security. The proposals of our protest are simple; effective measures which will ensure the termination of trolls; preventative measures which will stop waves of spam bots ravaging sites; and supportive measures which will ensure the vulnerable users are protected from undesired material!

We present to the Wetpaint staff our manifesto highlighting our concerns and recommendations for possible solutions.

    1. Waves of spam bots are continually attacking and destroying sites; flooding them with viruses, trojans and malicious adware!

SOLUTION: A simple logic problem to be completed during account creation; for example, “what does 2 + 7 equal?” or “Jenny is taller than Jack who is shorter than Jane. Who is tallest?” This would have several questions which computers cannot answer.
These have been proven to be 100% effective, if created properly, against attacks from a computer.

    2. Person A trolls a site. The staff bans them. Person A creates another account and continues trolling; and so on and so forth.

SOLUTION: A proper IP banning system. We need the ability to properly ban users. Whilst this solution has only a 44% estimated effectiveness, it is better than the current system which has 0% effectiveness against trolls creating new accounts.

  • Reference the G25 Protest There are many millions of Forums, wikis, BBS and other interactive sites on the internet. Each has to deal with Spam, spam-bots, trolls and sock-puppets.
Listed below are some of the ways to fight the evil doers.

    * Flood control: This forces users to wait for a short interval between making posts to the forum, thus preventing spambots from flooding the forum with repeated spam messages.

    * Registration control:
Some forums employ CAPTCHA (visual confirmation) routines on their registration pages to prevent spambots carrying out automated registrations. Simple CAPTCHA systems which display alphanumeric characters have proven vulnerable to optical character recognition software but those that scramble the characters appear to be far more effective.

    * Alternative is Textual Confirmation, where the user answers one or more random questions to prove he/she is not a spambot.

    * Forums have a feature where they send an e-mail to users who registered, either containing the password used to login or an activation code/link.

    * Some forums have required registration approval where the administrator has to approve accounts

  • Don't make me start another protest. At 8:54am GMT an account called, "wetpaint" which was unbanable uploaded 3 files to the ZSDW which were viruses.

The virus in question was Alureon.

At the same time the homepage had a 0x0 pixel youtube embeded with no edit history of who did it.

It took us close to an hour to repair everything.

Has Wetpaint been compromised? And if so what other wiki format sites would you suggest I bring the ZSDW to as a replacement?

  • Page not found -- very bad thing. You moved the page http://jointheimpact.com/protest-locations instead of forwarding it. This is really bad. What about all the sites who already link to it?

  • Mailing List I would like it to be more clear whether joining this site I am now on a mailing list in order to be contacted about future Join the Impact protests in my city, Portland, Oregon.

If for some reason this is not the case, a Join the Impact "join the mailing list" option would be great.

  • Page printing - THANKS for adding a print media style sheet I came here specificallyt to complain about this NOT being implemented. I've protested about this before - some weeks ago. I checked at the last minute - thinking maybe it'd been fixed and no mention had been made, and indeed I see that it HAS been fixed. I'm totally delighted. This was a modest but badly needed improvement, and we GOT IT. Way cool. The print page looks great. Thanks for this, folks!

  • Offensive Google ads One of my users has protested quite vehemently about the Google ads on the Wetpaint site I created. Given the content of the site, he feels that certain AdSense ads are inappropriate, and I understand where he is coming from. Is there a way for a Wetpaint creator to block certain certain categories of ads without having to pay for a premium subscription?

The site is about a specific approach to back and other forms of chronic pain. The users have often struggled with terrible, disabling pain for years or sometimes decades before finding this approach. As a result, users are often very critical of approaches that they may have wasted their money (and pain tolerance) on before finding this approach (which often cures the majority of their pain within months and very cheaply). It can really anger them to see ads for those other approaches.

Yet, "back pain" is probably a very high paying Adsense word, and it will probably have to be on the site somewhere. Is there any way to control which Adsense ads get displayed?

"Yeah, wetpaint removed it a while ago, I don't know why though."
It's unfortunate, really. It's been one of the most protested updates from their January 5th release. If you ask me, they should put it back with their next release.

  • What To Do Hi,

It goes without saying that we as a community are frustrated and angry over the new direction Wetpaint has taken, beginning three months ago. Our current "solution" has been to vocally protest these changes on threads such as this one: http://www.wetpaintcentral.com/thread/4418535/Hey+Wetpaint...How+about+giving+us+the+TRUTH. Unfortunately, protesting accomplishes nothing. Wetpaint has made it clear to us that they are no longer taking our suggestions into consideration, so why are we still bothering to post them?

I believe that there are better ways to get what we want. For starters, I have asked Jeremy's permission to go through Wetpaint Central's pages and eliminate any content that inspires false hope - for example, the Make a Suggestion page, which still states that Wetpaint loves to hear our opinions and ideas (obviously untrue). I also know that CryingDove has requested a simple link at the top of the page to a "status" page, where Wetpaint staff can keep us updated on bugs and system problems, like the database latency we've experienced today. Such a small feature will hopefully not be too hard for Wetpaint to implement.

I encourage everyone to share their positive ideas that can help us:
    1. Hold the attention of Wetpaint, and ensure that Wikis By Wetpaint remains relevant to their business.
    2. Find ways to cope with the situation - workarounds like those found on CryingDove's wiki, splats2.wetpaint.com.
    3. Come together as a community and work to keep the real Wetpaint alive. We are bigger and better than we were in 2006, so let's prove it. We don't need corporate involvement to inspire us, or keep our spirits up. There's nothing stopping us from running this show on our own; enterprises such as the continuation of the Golden Paint Can Awards, that have gone on without any help from Wetpaint, prove this.

  • Short but Fun. Thanks Very Much. About a year and a half at this place, in my opinion, it was not wasted. 1098 Contributions, and I think the majority of them were valuable. I helped people. I used my imagination and figured out workarounds for particular things, if it was an issue that had not been confronted before.

Of course, late 2010 I was made a moderator, by which time Wetpaint had already blown a hole in the side of their own ship. Wrong decisions from the business as a whole and continuous deteriation on the quality side of the service. But I didn't mind. I was willing to stay on the sinking ship, because hey, I can swim, right? It's not like there was any life boats or anything.

I spent a lot of my time answering threads that the other moderators (most of which are inactive) missed or simply could not answer, most likely due to lack of technical know-how. Clearly not much of an ambition down that road. But on the matter of technical know-how, I was often assumed to be one of many people who used this platform because I lacked knowledge on any of the web programming languages. It disgusted me how many people immediately lost any respect for me when they found out I was merely 13, and also refused to believe that I have the ability to program, for the same reasons.

In the thread about FanTapper, I was fine about protesting and such. But I was appalled, hell, I was DISGUSTED when people started arguing, turning against each other and fighting, and I was disgusted further still when I tried to do my job and stop the arguing and irrelevance, but all I received was pathetic, immature comments and even several trollish messages sent by several users. This was for trying to keep the community happy.

I flat-out refuse to be a part of such a pathetic community, and I apologise to those who are actually valuable additions and perfectly sensible people - CryingDove, bellswebster, ForestForTreesSMS, Losa78, and a couple others.

  • Petition to Wetpaint for Advanced Security to be Implemented
"I would not talk to Jeremy like that, unless, of cource, you want to be banned. I WILL I.P ban you if I have to.

I agree with Naru, please keep this petition and protest peaceful.

We don't want to have our cause discredited. As I said I am currently PM'ing with Jeremy, progress has started to be made.

  • The irony of the new Walmart advertising
"Hmm, thanks for the input. Glad I'm not the only one going crazy, lol.

Edit: Still a bit lost on the can't/don't complain thing. Coming from a mod (someone in charge) the word "don't" usually comes with the feeling of "or else". Being a mod myself, I'm not allowed to tell people not to do something unless I base my statement on site policy or rules handed down from the admin above me. Someone in charge telling you not to do something implies that it is against the rules."
Nowhere in this thread have I even requested that you stop protesting. There isn't any rule that prohibits you from doing so, as long as it is done in a polite manner.

  • Please Read Before Reporting A Clicking-Bug ZSDW site has almost been completely paralyzed.

Messages cannot be opened or read; links to threads aren't working; google chrome is a way around it.

    EDIT: Spelling.

PS. I'm not going to call any protests or anything on this one; I understand there have been a lot of bot, spam and hack attacks recently. Not to mention the new features that are being brought in.

Best of luck in fixing this, if we can help you at all, we will.
