Classification is a system for organizing materials according to some system--usually by subject or form. The purpose is to make each item readily available and to lead the patron/user to the item required, as well as to related items. The three main classification schemes used in the US are LC, DDC, and NLM. The main focus of this page is LC and some of the "tricks of the trade" that aren't written down anywhere.

Principles of classifying:
1. Class the item first according to subject and then by form. The exceptions to this are in literature and other places where form might be more important.
2. Class an item where it will be the most useful.
3. Place an item in the most specific subject division that will contain it.
4. When an item deals with 2 or 3 subjects, place it with the predominent subject, or with the one treated first. If it deals with more than 3 subjects, classify in the most specifice subject that covers them all.
