February 2010

This issue is believed to have been resolved as of Feb 5, 2010

Wetpaint has received reports from users that have been exposed to malware while on Wetpaint sites. The malware seems to be exploiting a vulnerability within Adobe Reader and Acrobat. Wetpaint is working to identify the source of the malware but we highly recommend that you protect your computer by making sure you have the latest Flash Player and Adobe Reader/Acrobat updates.
Also make sure you are always running a reputable anti-virus program and have all the latest updates for it.

Users have reported encountering the following malware:
  • BankerFox.A Trojan - This is a fake trojan that is reported by rogue security programs trying to make you think your system is infected. Do not click "Yes" or "OK" if you see a dialog window that says you are infected by the BankerFox trojan! Doing so will likely infect you with a real trojan or virus.
  • Trojan.Pidief.C
  • Trojan.Pidief.G
  • Trojan.Pidief.H

Critical Security Updates From Adobe
Adobe recently announced two critical security updates. One for:
We highly recommend that everyone install these updates to protect your computer from malware (trojans, viruses, etc.).

MindIsland Trojan Virus on Wetpaint.com (page: 1 2 3 4 5 ... last page) 116 Jul 5 2010, 10:45 AM EDT by Naru2008

A member of our wetpaint site alerted me to the fact that there is a "trojan" ad here at wetpaint that is one of the flash adverts. It tells you that "Your PC is infected" etc, and tries to install some nasty stuff if a person happens to agree to any of it. One of site members advises that this is now the 4th time over the last two weeks he's encountered this and he didn't have any other instances of his browser opened that time. He's thinking it's a sign of a bad script in one of the ads, and thought I should point it out to wetpaint.com.

Anonymous Virus threat 4 Mar 16 2010, 8:02 AM EDT by Naru2008

Visitors to the acac.wetpaint.com site have experienced virus attacks from "spyware protection 2009" which apparently attacks with viruses named BankerFox.A and Nuquel.E.

These threats are apparently commercial promotions but can affect windows files for computer use. The viruses may be distributed through the scrolling ads.

Does wetpaint have any means of removing viruses from sites?

Any further advice for site administrators to handle such problems?
