Using Wetpaint Sites |

Version 2 - view current page

Q. Can I make my site private? I don't want anyone else to be able to see my site.

A. At this time, we do not support private sites. If you build a site, it will be viewable to anyone who finds it.

Q. How do I add an image/video/link/table?

A. Find easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions for all of these EasyEdit toolbar functions in the Help section, linked in the upper right of every Wetpaint site.

Q. Are Wetpaint sites really free? Will I be charged later?

A. Wetpaint sites are really free. Wetpaint places ads on the page which are contextually relevant to the content of the page. These ads defray the costs of running the Wetpaint servers.

Q. Why can other people edit my website?

A. Wetpaint sites are openly editable by design! This feature allows people to collaborate as they create content for the site, and brings like-minded people together who share a common passion.

Q. Okay, that’s great, but I still don’t want others to edit my website. How do I change this?

A. As the creator of your site, you have two options to control who has permission to directly edit pages:

  • Manually “lock” individual site pages. Learn how.

  • Set your global permissions scheme to “invite-only” mode so that you can control who has access to edit pages. Learn how.

Q. I want my website to have a customized look, like Wetpaint-owned sites. Can I change the background design (add images, change colors, etc.)?

A. At this time, Wetpaint does not allow site creators to edit the CSS file to create custom designs and styles. You may change the site “skin” (its background design style and colors) at any time by choosing from the 18 site design options currently offered for Wetpaint sites.

You can also customize the masthead of your site by uploading a logo or image file. (Wetpaint supports .jpg, .gif, and .png formats.)

Let us know how important the ability to alter the site CSS file is to you in our Feedback section.

Q. Can I sell things on my Wetpaint site? Can I set up a shopping cart? How can I use Wetpaint to promote my business?

A. While you have the right to use your Wetpaint site for any legal purpose, the Wetpaint platform is not optimized for nor equipped with standard e-commerce functions, such as shopping cart functionality. Wetpaint sites work best as collaboratively generated content and community sites.

Q. Why doesn’t Google find my site when I type it in?

A. Wetpaint sites are search-friendly and can be recognized by search engines, but it takes time for sites to mature to the point where they will show up in search engine results. Our product development team is always working on ways to optimize Wetpaint sites for better search engine pickup, but there are also steps you can take as you build and organize your site. Visit the Wetpaint Search Engine Optimization Guide for top tips on getting your site noticed.

A. Visit the Wetpaint Search Engine Optimization Guide for top tips on getting your site noticed.

Q. Can I add games and music to my site?

While Wetpaint does not facilitate uploading and hosting of audio, video, or other web application files, you may insert links to files hosted elsewhere. (We do currently support YouTube videos. Learn more.)

Let us know how important this feature is to you in our Feedback section.

Q. How do I get the EasyEdit button back when I return to my site?

A. It is likely that you have set your permissions scheme to registration-only mode, which means that you first need to sign in to your site to enable the editing functions, like the EasyEdit button and Page Toolbox.

Q. I can’t find the moderator toolset. How do I get it back?

A. You must be signed in with the username and password you used to create your site in order to enable the Moderator Toolset.

Q. I see Google text ads on my site – does Wetpaint have a revenue-sharing program?

A. Wetpaint places ads on the page which are contextually relevant to the content of the page. These ads offset the costs of running the Wetpaint servers. We do not at this time support revenue-sharing ad programs for freely hosted sites in the Wetpaint network.

Q. How do I delete the site and account I’ve created?

A. We do not delete Wetpaint sites and accounts upon request. However, your site will automatically be deleted after a period of inactivity. If you have posted material to your site you do not wish to be publicly viewed, we recommend that you edit the pages to remove the content or, if you are a site creator or moderator, you can delete the pages.

Your Wetpaint account provides you access to a large number of communities, so you can use it to visit thousands of other Wetpaint sites. There is no obligation to use the account, and our privacy policy ensures your information will never be shared with anyone else.

Q. How can I create a page template?

A. Creating a preformatted page template is a handy way to quickly generate new pages on your site. For an overview of how to create and use a page type template, visit the Managing Templates help topic.

Q. I’m having trouble setting up another Wetpaint site – can I only have one? It keeps telling me that the “username is already taken” or the “email address is already in use.”

A. We welcome you to create as many Wetpaint sites as you want! To avoid the problems you’re experiencing, you need to sign in using your universal Wetpaint account username and password -- the one you used to register and create your first site.
