So that feed links only available to members of private sites. Maybe the RSS feed link could have an encrypted site ID added like:

we are having a lot of difficulties adding new members to our private site, we REALLY don't want to have it public to add members THEN go private again, cos then it defeats the purpose of being private in the first place. Our new members work across different timezones, so there is no way for moderators to know when they are likely to sign in, thereby limiting the window of the site being public.
Such a limitation doesn't make any sense to users who want to grow the community but in a structured, orderly fashion? Will the feature to add members without going public be available anytime soon?

| robboyd | Using Two Wiki's - one public/one private | 2 | Aug 15 2009, 7:33 PM EDT by CryingDove | ||||

Our neighborhood wiki, CastleHillsCommunity.com has been VERY successful. We just took the whole site private due to concerns from neighbors who were airing their dirty laundry..I agree this is the right thing to do but some other things are happening such as people grumbling about the very limited information they get when they hit the main page now...we have very limited character count to explain about the privacy policy and what to do...What I would really like to do is have a much more informative and pretty front page that is public and everything else behind it private. I know we can't do this today BUT I had an idea and would love some input on it:
1. Why can't I create a 2nd wiki that will probably remain just one page, set it up exactly like I want and have one big link to the private wiki. I would want to move our custom URL to hit the new 'public' site but that should not be hard....what am I overlooking here....does this sound like a good idea to get a public AND a private side to this? Thanks! Robb

Is there a way to change/enhance the page that non-members see if they go to a private wiki? It would be nice to be able to put the same logo, for example, as is on the main pages. It would also be nice to customize more of the message there, so the header can say something more personal or site-specific than "XXX is a Private Wiki". If there's a way to do this, could someone give me a hint?
Thanks |

Is it possible for someone to sign in as a visitor to a private site (ie to view and request joining). The drop down "What is this used for" for the site descriptor gives this impression.

Do you expect to extend this to make individual pages private/public? One use is to make "works in progress" visible to worker bees before unveiling to the community at large.

It says:
"Invited Members: A private site is only viewable by people you invite." What if someone signs up on your wiki even though they have not been invited? Will they still be able to gain access? Does the admin of the wiki have to approve them? What if before the site went private an uninvited person signed up on the wiki - will they still have access or will they automatically be restricted from viewing because they were not invited?
