What are Permissions?

Permissions can be thought of as "what am I allowed to do on this site?"

Permissions can be looked at from two perpectives:
  1. Site Permissions - Settings that affect the whole site.A site set as "Private" versus a site that doesn't require registration has a very different permissions scheme. Site creators and administrators can change the site permissions scheme as well as an individual users permission status.
  2. User Permissions - Settings that affect an individual user. A registered user can not interact with a site to the extent that moderator can for example.

Both of these factors affect how you and the other users on a site can interact with each other and the site.

What can and can't I do on a site?

We have created three charts that illustrate what you can do on a certain type of site based on your user permissions status:

If you don't know which type of site you are a member of, check with the site creator or administrator. If you are the site creator or admin and you don't know, you can check your site permissions scheme in the wiki settings.
