What are Permissions?

Permissions can be thought of as "what am I allowed to do on this site?"

Permissions can be looked at from two perspectives:
  1. Site Permissions - Settings that control how users contribute or otherwise interact with the site. Site creators and administrators can change the site permissions scheme as well as an individual user's role.
  2. User Permissions - Settings that control how a user can contribute or interact with a site, as indicated by their role. Different roles include: registered user, writer, moderator, administrator, and site creator.

Where these two factors meet dictates how each user can interact with the site.

What can and can't I do on a site?

We have created three charts that illustrate what you can do on a certain type of site based on your user permissions status:

If you don't know which type of site you are a member of, check with the site creator or administrator. If you are the site creator or admin and you don't know, you can check your site permissions scheme in the wiki settings.
