There should be password protected pages or the ability to give selected users permission to view certain pages.
EDIT: There should be permission restrictions -- only admins viewing selected pages etc.

Josh,
I think she means that she wants to be able to lock her pages from editing by fellow users without becoming a Moderator to do it.
While I understand her wishes, I don't necessarily agree with them. This site is all about inter-connectivity between users, so PW protected pages and threads would defeat the purpose. Thanks for all of your hard work and keep it up!

"From my perspective, it's just ONE MORE pw to remember of hundreds. I'd rather just use the features section and limit editing privileges to those of Mod rank or above, should such caution be necessary."
You could set it to 'Remember' you.
AllFair4H
Jun 1 2008, 9:44 PM EDT
I hadn't considered that, MK. Still, I'm mostly an open-page Wiki-ist. Censorship, even self inflicted, isn't my cup of tea. It sets a bad precedent for future upgrades.
As for setting it to remember me, that kind of defeats the purpose of a PW, since using that feature would permit any other person who is even slightly intelligent to hack the page. Better just to let others edit or add content and keep an eye on their choices. It's my creation in some cases, so I'm very fussy about what's said or which pics are posted. That's more than enough watchfulness for me.
Mr_KP
Jun 2 2008, 3:15 AM EDT
This is only optional. If this comes out in a future release, you have the ability to choose whether or not you want some pages to be publicly viewable.
Madusha said at the creation of this thread that he wanted certain users not to be able to see some pages, let alone edit them. The option of restricting editing pages to Writers (or Moderators) is already usable. He wanted some pages to be 'hidden' from the rest of the users, i.e. when they go to that page, it would say "This page needs a password. Please enter the correct password." or something like that, so that they can't view the content of the page. This would help a lot. For example. some sites may want to use a restricted page as a 'Mod/Admins Section' where they dicuss the ongoing of the site etc.
As for a solution to remember all those passwords, you could just type them and send them in an e-mail to yourself, or save the e-mail as a draft. That way, you don't need to remember them, and nobody else can see them.

"on any one wiki, you'd like some pages that only the moderators and admins can see?"

Ideally, I'd like to be able to specify who can access different pages, preferably by member name, but it would be OK for a while if it was done by permission level.
Any hope of getting this?

Yeah, that's both the best and the worst feature of wikis in general.
I'd like an easy-to-edit interactive site, but I'd also like to be able to control exactly WHO can interact WHERE, as well as WHO can read WHAT. The only option right now is to have different Wetpaing places for each, and that could get to be a nightmare real quick.

Vandalism or over-eager editing by a fellow wiki-ist? That's a fine line, but I sympathize with your problem. I'd hate for anyone to edit the stories I'm writing without my consent, so I simply lock the page to anyone below a Mod. That seems to resolve it for me.

Can you tell me how would I set a password for my wiki? I was unable to find this in the FAQ section. I just set up an educational wiki to be used by hundreds of students over the course of two years, so I'd hate to have to invite each and every one. Still, I don't want just any user not in my classes to register and be able to edit pages. It would be great if I could distribute a classroom password instead so that only those with the password can register and edit.

There's a option most of you obviously haven't considered. Take your Wiki's "Private". Then you invite in only those you totally trust and whose company you enjoy. That eliminates the possibility of a hacked page or account on your site, because you know everyone in there and whether he or she's capable of such nonsense.

Yeah, my site actually has a moderator-only private spinoff site because you can't limit acess to pages... ideally it could be dome both by member and and broadly by permission level.
Also, it would be ideal if you could limit access by both inclusion and exclusion. Example:
INCLUSION: You have a certain page on your site that has just been going insane with fad storms, account suicides, and the like. To contain that page's insanity, you decide to limit access. The small group of users able to visit now will be about 8% of the total userbase, so it would be more convenient to input the names of those who can visit than those who can't.
EXCLUSION: You have a certain page on your site and a group of suspicious users who you don't want seeing that page, perhaps because it contains semi-sensetive information that could be used by untrustworthy to "game the system" and gain an unfair advantage over other users. In this case, it would be more convenient to input the names of those who can't visit the page than it would be to input the names of those who can't.

Idea's great! I have an addition...
how about a password-protected "Easy Edit"? I know there is a lock page feature, you can even deny registered users access to editing pages unless they apply as writer, but I was thinking of protecting a page from being editted by everyone, including mods and up (except for the creator of course) on a free-for-all editting site...

I like both the original idea by Madusha and the addition. Very good Ideas.
Come on Wetpaint, add this new feature. It is a really good idea.

They said a few weeks ago that it's currently not a feature they are working on but may be considered later on.
Keep the support coming!
