A page description provides potential visitors from search engines with a concise explanation of what your page is about. By editing and improving the page description on your Wetpaint site, you can effectively increase click throughs from your search listing in search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Take a look at the example below of the cheats page listing from the SporeIllustrated site:

Page Description - Wetpaint Central

Notice that the description draws users in, describes what is on the page, and benefits from bolded text that matches the search query. Also notice that it reads naturally and isn't stuffed with keywords as the page description does not affect search engine rankings - it only affect the text displayed below the link.

The best page descriptions:

  • Are one to two sentences
  • Use between 15-25 words
  • Describe what you can find on the page and why someone might want to check it out
  • Use complete sentences
  • Include at least one search term in the description. This will not affect the search ranking, but will garner bolding within the results.
