Reordering navigation menu?
Oct 19 2006, 1:56 PM EDT | Post edited: Oct 19 2006, 1:56 PM EDT
At the moment, as far as I can tell, each level of the navigation menu has its pages organised alphabetically. It would be really nice to be able to rearrange these....

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. We are considering different ways of allowing you to set the navigation order yourself. 13  out of 14 found this valuable. Do you?

Yeah, this is my top problem right now. I'm trying to start a blog on my site, and have yet to figure out an entry titling scheme that will force a reverse order sort of entry pages. It's maddening. I truly hope this problem is highly prioritized for solution. 2  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

Hi there,
I've found that a way around this is to number the page titles, that way you can arrange them in the order you want. Also, if you want a page to be at the top of the navigation menu, try inserting an askerisk or space before the page name--that might force it to the top of the list.
Hope that helps.

I am already using this trick at my site, but it's a kludge, and does not improve navigation appearance one bit. We simply need a better solution to this problem, as soon as possible.

I agree with the last poster. If I understand their request, it's similar to something I'd like to be able to do, which is to create a new page "under" a current page, but HIDE it from showing up in the navigation menu. In other words, it could be a minor or side topic related to that page, which I would link to it from that page, but I don't want it to show up on the nav menu for the sake of keeping the nav menu nice and clean. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Hi there,
I think you can hide a page from the navigation menu by moving it to "uncategorized." You can still link to it from a page so people can get to it if they click on the link, but it won't show up in the nav. The only thing is that if you're the site creator, you can access all the uncategorized pages, but regular visitors would only be able to get to it by the link, or by searching for the topic in the search box...

I'm not sure this is true. Have you tried it? If it works, why not write up a "how to" on this and put it somewhere in the Moderator Lounge? But of course, this, too is a bit kludgy.

I thought of using uncategorized for this, but I have't tried it. It does seem kludgy to me as well. And the list of uncategorized pages could get a little unmanageable if it got used a lot. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

12. well, in terms of interface widgets and such...

you could use a "move up" or "move down" button, I guess like mac airport interface.
personally, if I were doing the interface, I'd use the functional equivalent of a check box, with buttons at the top for: move up, move to top, move to(next clicked selection); group under(newfolder), remove from list, clear selections, delete, duplicate... whatever you find useful. it'd basically be a glorified move-up/down button, but i think it'd get all the jobs done I've been thinking about wanting to do.

Wetpaint--a really great way to do this, would be adding a box in the New Page pop-up, that allows you to type in page order! I'd also love it if we could choose a "page type" for lack of a better description. I think of the pages which have the arrows > as 'parent' pages and anything that reveals by clicking on the parent pages a 'relatives' or related pages. Just adding an additional drop down to assign page priorty would help out a great deal!

Until we have a solution, I have learned to ponder the new page name before creating it, however, which accounts for some wierd page names! My suggestion is to think on how folks will use your site and carefully choose/use parent pages to organize contnet. It's a hassle, but this will work for ordered content like blogs. Pretend you have a new, blank site & I'll use blog related names in this example of how I've done this:

From your Home page, add a new page titled, Blog. Blog is the parent page for all (new) monthly pages, labeled A) Dec etc. Anytime you add a month, create it from Blog.

Within each month, add new pages for weeks that correspond to the monthly label like- Dec: Week 1. Again, new Weeks should be added from the >month name< page.

If all of your blogs are long, you could break them up into day of the week pages, but that will get complicated! Instead try using a 7 day overview in A) Dec: Week 1 and create new pages with a clickable "text teaser" and redirect within Dec: Week 1 to seperate pages for big blog enteries when necessary.

The reason for making a parent page for each month--you may want to do an overview of the whole month, to help visitors find specific content. You could highlight your 'best of' or reader favs. for the month or you may want to include a Blog Highlights that's visible from Home.

Hope this makes sense and helps! Hmmm...urge to make a new wetpaint site just for website tips and tricks! :D Slick Tricks? Wetpaint Pointers? Moderator Secrets?
Any suggestions?

Opps to clarify..."type in page order" should be "type in page order by number"

Heh. Can we have an Edit: option for our own comments? Not only do I ted to come here late night, I also have a hard time proof reading wee text in these tiny boxes! Errors abound!

Wow! I forgot about this post! LOL! I still want an order option & was rather sad that it wasn't in our holiday goodies from wetpaint. In the meantime I just made a huge site map to deal with it, which also explains the weird navigation to new visitors. I linked to the Site Map from my Home page. Not ideal, but better than hearing, 'Your website is so hard to navigate" from family & friends that visit.

Here's my map if it helps anyone else out:

Please, please give us a way to do this. Having the wrong things at the top of a navigation list lends the wrong level of importance to sometimes minor sections. Kludgy fixes like using numbers, spaces or asterisks simply are not acceptible. Will re-naming a page later on blow out all the links to it? I simply can't publicize the existence of one of my wikis until this is fixed. 3  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

Yes renaming will screw up the links. In addition deleting a page with another page under (or related) will bump that page to Uncategorized until you move it to a new location. :(

I think this was on the list of things they were working on though...have a look see at the Feature Requests.
