Make Your Site FunThis is a featured page

Want to break some of the monotony on your site?

If so, you may want to try some of these things to spice up your site. Especially handy on a fan site for either a show or character, these games and events can really increase participation and member activity:
Speaking from experience, these can be a major lifeline whenever your show is on hiatus.

Caption Games

On a fan site, all you need is a screencap from your show and presto!, you have yourself a caption game. All you need to do is post it and then have your members post a funny or appropriate caption to it.

The CSI Wiki has had a very successful Caption Game running for over a year, Take a look.
General things to know:
  • Because of the usual poll widget limitations, you may only be able to have a limit of ten captions...unless you want to pay $200 a year for PollDaddy or sift through hundreds of PMs or threads for votes.
  • You should probably make it a weekly thing.

Thread Games

You already have everything you need for a thread game. Thread games are really simple and only need a little moderating.
Some games you can have in the threads are:

Scavenger Hunts

These games can be a little tricky to set up, but can also be a source of fun for members, as well as a way to get people to look around your site.
A way you can pull something like this off is to create simple word clues and post them on various pages with the text color matching the background so they are invisible. You could also hide them in images as Rollover text. Then, you set up some clues on the event page and have your members find them all.
For an example, see the game set up on CSI Wiki.

Other examples

  • Distorted picture game: Use a photo manipulator to distort a screencap from your show and have members guess which episode it is from. The same can be done for games. Use the photo manipulator to distort a screenshot from a game and have members guess which game it is from.
  • Quizzes: You can either use a widget or set up a series of pages with right or wrong answers. This could take a while to set up, but can be a source of entertainment for your members.
  • Roast your characters: You can set up a roast of your characters to get your members to kindly poke fun at them.
