How can I add a Google map to my site?

Basic Steps to add a Google Map to your wiki page involves creating your google map, creating the IFRAME code to embed, and then inserting that IFRAME code into a Widget on your wiki page.

Steps

  1. If you don't already have one, you'll need a Google Account to create and save a map.
  2. Go to Google My Map and create/save your map.
  3. Create the IFRAME code necessary to display your map. If you don't know how to write your own IFRAME code you can use the free "Google Map Embedder" to create the code for you. The Embedder tool can be found at: http://www.dr2ooo.com/tools/maps/ and there's a quick "how to" written by Noel Jenkins located on their site if you need more specific info on how to use the tool.
  4. Open your wiki page and click the Widget tool button. Then choose the "Other Widget" option.
  5. When the option window opens, paste into it - your IFRAME code that you wrote. If you used the above mentioned Embedder tool to create the code for you, then copy the code from the right map box code window and paste it into your widget window.
  6. Close the widget and save the changes to your wiki page. Your map will now show up on the wiki page.

Notes

  • Pictured below is an embedded map showing the stadium where the St Louis Cardinals play ball. I used the Google Map Embedder tool to generate my IFRAME code and it took about 5 minutes for me to insert this map into the wiki page.

  • This map included controls in the top left corner to allow the user to zoom and move around the google map as most people are accustomed to. The map could have been created using any of the formats google uses such as satellite, etc. I just used the street map flavor because I happen to like that one.
