The challenge of getting one's webpages to work in all browsers is daunting. With complex, dynamic, database-supported, software-driven websites such as those offered by Wetpaint.com, it simply isn't possible for websites to work equally well in all browsers.

Browsers differ in several fundamental ways (

  • Basic Features Offered (Example the Opera browser offers a sophisticated built-in email program);
  • HTML Processing - How the page formatting language basic to all webpages is converted into a visible page;
  • CSS (cascading style sheet) rendering - CSS defines a page's layout. It's what gives a site it's "look and feel." Though there technically is a standard for how to render CSS, some browsers (notably Microsoft Internet Explorer) do not adhere to the standard. This makes it very difficult to make a page look good and function well on all browsers.
  • JavaScript features and performance (JavaScript, a programming language, is built into most modern browsers, but how it is interpreted varies a bit from browser to browser).
The last three considerations particularly impact how well Wetpaint works in a browser.

Q. How do I find out what browser I'm currently using?

A. At the top of your browser you should see a menu option marked "Help". If you click on Help you should see "About (browser name)". Here's an example:

Q. I keep getting a clipboard message when trying to edit my page. Why is that?

A. It's a security warning setting that can be changed in Internet Explorer. Here's the fix:

1. At the top of the Internet Explorer window click Tools, then Internet Options.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. Under Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings, click Internet.
4. Click Custom Level.
5. In the Scripting section, under Allow paste operations via script, click Enable.
6. Click OK.

Q. Why can't I use Safari on Wetpaint?

A. Currently, Wetpaint is not able to fully support the Safari browser. When using Safari on Wetpaint, some features will work and others may not. Wetpaint has been working diligently to find solutions for the features that are not currently supported by Safari. We have filed bugs and sent letters to the good people at Apple and the Safari team, but unfortunately we have not received the support we need from them as of yet. We are constantly improving Wetpaint, and we will continue to reevaluate and work towards offering full browser support for Safari users.

In the meantime, if you’re using a Mac, we recommend that you use the Firefox browser. You can download it for free at www.mozilla.com.

Q. Why can't I use Chrome on Wetpaint?
A. Google Chrome runs on the same technology as Safari.

Q. How do I clear my browser's cache, and cookies?

A. Many minor issues such as problems signing in or accessing a page can be alleviated by clearing your browsers temp files and cookies from time to time. This is especially true when Wetpaint has recently released an update to the site and your browser cache contains old data. Use the processes below to clear your cache and cookies.

For Firefox users on Windows Platform Computers:

  1. Click on "Tools" at the top of the browser window
  2. Select "Clear Private Data" from the dropdown menu

For Firefox users on a Mac:

  1. Choose Firefox > Preferences
  2. Click on the "privacy" tab.

Q: Can I use access Wetpaint from my mobile phone?

A: You can read Wetpaint sites from any mobile browser, including OpenWave and BlackBerry Browser. Most mobile web browsers have only limited support for JavaScript, so you will not be able to sign in or use many of wetpaint's features.
