You can ban an anonymous user by their IP address, but another solution is to change your site's permissions scheme so that users have to log in in order to post comments or edit the site. See the following pages for more info:

If someone makes anonymous edits to a page on your site, their IP address will show up as a link when you view the page history. If you click on the IP address it will give you the option to ban it. I only recommend doing this as a last resort because banning an IP address can potentially block many other people from accessing your site. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

You would just have to delete the comment, and to prevent it from happening in the future, change permissions so that only registered users can leave comments. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

What about registered users? Can you still ban their IP address NOT their permissions? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Banning users by IP address can be circumvented by using a proxy service such as http://www.anonymizer.com/

Also, if the user connects to the web using dial-up, then their IP address will change every time they logon. While most of Europe connects either by ADSL or Cable whereby users are allocated a fixed IP, there are still vast expanses of the USA which still don't have access to broadband and are reliant on dial-up using 56K modems. All you can really do in those circumstances is to ignore the abuser and hope he gets bored and moves on somewhere else.

Comments do now track the IP addresses of anonymous users. They can be seen by Moderators and up.

IP banning is a temporary solution. There is no permanent solution other than taking your site Private.
