~My Entry For The Tenth Contest~


Tearfall lay in the forest with light flakes of snow falling gently around him. He had to get away from his clan and the excited little kits that had cried out with joy at the first sight of the snow. He had not had the same reaction. Snow was his enemy his worst nightmare. He lay down in the white blanket of dread remembering that horrible day.
He was only 7 moons old and barley out of the nursery. He had been made an apprentice late because his beloved sister Springpaw had broken her paw and he had asked to wait for her. His mother Pineblossom had been so happy for them and had groomed their fur till it sparkled. It was his first morning as an apprentice and he jumped up out of bed. He shook Springpaw gently “WAKE UP!” he meowed excitedly jumping up and down with glee. Springpaw hopped out of her nest her tail flicking back and forth happily. “Come on!” he called running out of the den “lets get mom to show us the territory!” They ran into the leaders den where Pineblossom was talking to Beachstar about the patrols. “Pineblossom come on you promised!” they whined. “Ok I’m coming”, she laughed giving Beachstar an affectionate lick over the head before she ran after Tearpaw and Springpaw. “That’s the old abandoned horse home”, she said flicking her tail to an old wooden building as they ran by it. “Can we see the great cliff!?” begged Springpaw excitedly “sure!” said pine blossom leading the way through the trees. Springpaw suddenly cried out with joy “Tearpaw look it’s snowing!” she screeched happily jumping around. Tearpaw laughed with joy and danced around in the snow. “Do you guys still want to see the great cliff?” asked Pineblossom “it’s snowing pretty hard we could go back to camp and see it some other time.”, she meowed. “No, lets go!” cried Springpaw “it’ll look so amazing covered in snow!” “Ok” said Pine blossom hurrying through the snow-covered trees. “Ok were here!” she meowed as they pushed through the last of the trees. “Let’s go to the top!” cried Tearpaw climbing up the snow-covered hill. Springpaw scrambled after him. “Come back here right now!” meowed Pineblossom sternly “you know the rules!” “Fine” grumbled Tearpaw padding down the hill. He stopped and looked over his shoulder. “Springpaw are you coming?” he asked her. “It’s so beautiful,” she whispered softly looking at the soft flakes that were forming a thick blanket over the trees far below. She stared at them intently. “Come on!” yowled Tearpaw “lets go hunting before it gets too cold!” “Wha-!” she cried snapping out of her trance. “I said lets go hun-,” he gasped in horror as Springpaw yowled with terror as her back paws slipped and she grabbed at the icy cliff top trying to climb back up. “Hold on!” cried Pineblossom racing up the hill. Pineblossom grabbed Springpaw’s paw and scrambled back on the ice trying to pull Springpaw up. She gasped and went sliding off the cliff “NO!” shrieked Tearpaw running up the cliff. He looked down fearfully and saw the broken bodies of his sister and mother lying in the snow far below.
Tearfall shuddered at the memory “it was my fault” he whispered his head drooping. He got to his feet and padded back into camp and into the elders den “hi dad” he meowed quietly to Birchstar. Birchstar was glaring at the white flakes falling outside the den with bitter hatred in his eyes. “It was 8 seasons ago” meowed Tearfall “I think it’s time to move on” he suggested gently padding out of the den and out of camp. He padded through the snowy forest and up the hill to the snowy cliff. He sat on the edge and looked out at the sunset. He felt pelts brushing his on both sides and he looked around but saw nothing. “it really is beautiful” he said softly looking at the purple and orange sky and he heard a soft voice in his ear “it is” he gasped as he recognized the gentle voice of his sister. He smiled and padded down the snowy hill. He turned around and hope filled his heart. His sister and mother were with him and they always would be.
